Matthew 5:1-16: Citizens of the Messiah's Kingdom

Power Point Show Part 1

Intro.

1. Matthew has introduced the Messiah's preaching (4:17, 23a) and healing (4:23b-24). He now shows a sample of each (5-7; 8-9).

2. Sermon of the Mount (Matt. 5-7): 'The manifesto of the King' - In it is the seed of every moral and spiritual truth of His kingdom.

a. Grand summation of the gospel of Christ.

b. Theme:Gospel of the kingdom (4:23) ['kingdom' - 5:3, 10, 19, 20; 6:10, 33; 7:21].

3. Outline of the sermon:

a. Attitudes of citizens of the kingdom, 5:2-16.

b. Righteousness of the kingdom, 5:17-7:12.

c. Exhortations to enter the kingdom, 7:13-27.

d. The effect of the sermon on the audience, 7:28-29.

I. WHAT IS THE KINGDOM?Dan.2:44 (Matt. 3:2; 4:17).

A. God's Kingship, Rule and Recognized Sovereignty: Royal Power.

1. The spiritual reign of God over the hearts and lives of men,Lk. 17:20-21. (Our attitudes that shape our actions.)

B. The Church, Matt. 16:18-19 (Mk. 9:1).

1. NT church is the kingdom of God on the earth in the gospel age.

II. BEATITUDES: THE ATTITUDES AND BLESSEDNESS OF KINGDOM CITIZENS, 5:2-12 (Attitudes 'to be' – Essential to citizenship).

A. Blessed: Good Fortune Spiritually.

1. Happy, fortunate: Broader and deeper than earthly happiness.

2. An inward condition that one's environment cannot seriously affect (does not lie in outward circumstances but inward life).

3. This happiness is not in what a man has, but what he is.

4. Based on moral and spiritual well-being.

B. The Attitudes of the Blessed, 5:3-12.

1. Poor in spirit (5:3): Spiritually destitute. 'Poverty of spirit in contrast to pride or self-sufficiency; Total dependence on God' *

a. Recognizes spiritual poverty, Isa. 66:2.

b. Needs spiritual guidance; totally dependent on God, Psa. 51:17

2. Mourn (5:4): Due to spiritual condition. (Godly sorrow for sin)

a. Grief stricken over personal sin and its effect of alienation.

b. Comforted, Isa. 61:1-3; Jas. 4:9-10.

3. Meek (5:5): Humble, harnessed strength. 'Strength of character brought into submission to God; Yielding to God.' *

a. Submissive under provocation and receives God's blessing, Psa. 37:11 (1, 3, 5, 7). Not weakness/timidity/shyness (Moses).

b. Power under control: Harnessed interests, desires and deeds (1 Cor. 9:27). cf. 'Not my will but thine be done.'

4. Hunger and thirst after righteousness (5:6): Eagerness; intense desire to be right with God.

a. Insatiable appetite, Psa. 42:1; 1 Pet. 2:2.

b. This soul is satisfied by the things of God.

5. Merciful (5:7): 'Pity, good will, active kindness toward anyone in trouble.' * Compassionate

a. Citizens of the kingdom of God look outward to others.

b. Patterned after God, Lk. 6:36-38.

6. Pure in heart (5:8): Integrity of the inner person.

c. Pure heart approaches and stands before God, Psa. 24:3-5.

7. Peacemakers (5:9): Share and promote peace.

a. Loving harmony, unity and tranquility; Seeks reconciliation with God and man, Rom. 12:18.

b. Out of mercy and from a pure heart he helps others obtain peace with God (reconciliation), cf. Jesus, Eph. 2:17-18.

8. Persecuted (5:10-12): Willing to suffer for truth and righteousness (Christ). 1 Pet. 4:16

a. Separates the genuine from the counterfeit, 2 Tim. 3:12.

b. Heavenly reward, 5:12; 1 Pet. 1:3-9.

III. IMPACT OF KINGDOM CITIZENS ON THE WORLD, Matt. 5:13-16.

A. Salt: Distinctive, Flavoring and Preserving Influence on the World.

B. Light: Luminaries (transmitters of light). The influence of godly lives reflects the spiritual nature of the kingdom of God.

Conclusion

1. Our attitudes, character and impact must be measured by the Messiah's standard of truth, the gospel of the kingdom!

2. Our citizenship is in heaven; Live like it! Phil. 3:20 (1:27)

Installation Instructions

These zipped setup.exe files contain TextPad, with the English user interface, plus one other language, and a dictionary for the spell checker, as shown in the tables. If the online help is not available in a given language, it is supplied in English. For your security, all executable files are digitally signed.

After you have downloaded the zip file, extract the EXE file, run it and follow the instructions.

Note

  • It is not advisable to install both the 32 and 64-bit editions on the same computer.
  • When upgrading from the previous major release (eg. 7 to 8), the installation process will try to preserve your current TextPad settings.
